Dear Oakland Families,
It is with much excitement that I welcome you back to Oakland Elementary School for the 2020-2021 school year. Oakland Elementary School is a school full of supportive, dedicated, and caring teachers and staff, who work tirelessly on a daily basis in the best interest of kids. I consider myself extremely fortunate to be a part of this team.
This is my 7th year at Oakland. I have been an active and supportive member of Bloomington Schools District 87 where I have been the assistant principal at BHS for five years. In addition, I was an assistant principal for five years at a 4th/5th grade school. I taught in an elementary school for 5 years where I was a reading and math specialist as well as, a gifted instructor. I have coached multiple sports at all ages.
Throughout my years in education, I have continued to stay current on best practices for kids and successful schools. In my eyes, one of the most important aspects of my work as Oakland’s principal is building solid relationships with students, families, and teachers. It will be very important to me to be in the classrooms, hallways, lunchroom, and on the playground getting to know your child or children. In my past experience, I have found kids really appreciate a person who genuinely invests in them and who is fair in decision making. These two things are extremely important to me.
In addition to building strong relationships with all of you, it will be particularly important to me make sure your child and you feel safe at school. If you ever have a concern about something or a question about a specific situation or procedure I invite you to call me at (309)662-4302 or email me at [email protected] . Communication is paramount in a school. For this reason, I will always encourage you to contact your child’s teacher or me with questions.
Oakland is a school that has many things to be proud of. Thank you for having your son or daughter at Oakland Elementary School.
Educationally yours,
David LaFrance
